Ano Nuevo Seal Walks

California Wildlife at its Best

Año Nuevo State Park, about 20 miles north of Santa Cruz, is one of the largest mainland breeding colonies in the world for the northern elephant seal. Docent-guided walks, between December 15 and March 31, feature the elephant seals in their natural habitat. The viewing requires a 3-4 mile moderate hike over varied terrain, including sand dunes and lasts about two and a half hours.

Why we ♥ it

Hunted to near extinction in the late 1800’s, the northern elephant seal population has recovered and they now come by the thousands to feed, mate, and pup on the shores of Ano Nuevo. The docents are well trained and explain the life of seals and answer your questions. This is now a protected area, it’s amazing to see these majestic animals up close in their natural environment. Reservations are recommended!

Please remember:

  • You must be on a guided walk to view seals during this period
  • Make a reservation ahead of time
  • All natural and cultural features are protected by law and may not be disturbed or removed
  • No pets are permitted
  • No umbrellas or baby strollers
  • No smoking
  • It can get chilly, dress appropriately
