We love it for many reasons, not the least of which is the architectural and ecological significance. Designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan between 1913 and 1928, the Asilomar Center constitutes her largest collection of Arts & Crafts style architecture in one location. You can stay in a Historic Room in one of thirteen of Morgan’s original structures that remain today, now on the National Register of Historic Places, John Steinbeck lived here in a cottage owned by his sister that is now part of the grounds.

Staying here allows you to live in a unique coastal ecosystem of restored beachfront dunes and Monterey pine forest. Santa Lucia granodiorite, the rock forming coastal shoreline, is more than 100 million years old. The meadow here is home to one of the world’s rarest plants, Pacific Grove clover. Sea lions and seals make their homes in the coastal shores and some of the best marine tide pools are here to explore.
