The California Condor, a success story

The California Condor, with a wingspan of nearly 10 feet and weighing up to 25 pounds, is the largest land bird in North America.

These majestic creatures historically ranged from California to Florida and Western Canada to Northern Mexico. By the mid-1900’s, the condor population had dropped dramatically, and by 1967 the California Condor was listed as “endangered”.

In 1982, only 23 Condors survived world-wide. By 1987, all remaining wild Condors were placed into a captive breeding program, beginning an intensive recovery program to save the California Condor from extinction.

As of 2014, 469 California Condors survive, 276 in the wild and 193 in captivity and more than 60 fly over the Ventana Wilderness in Big Sur.

The Ventana Wildlife Society restored a population of bald eagles to central California and dedicated the last 25 years to restoring California condors to the wild while providing meaningful outdoor experiences to youth and families. In doing so, they create hope for humans and wildlife to thrive, together.
