Anchored by the inspiring beauty of Big Sur

The storied Esalen Institute is located on 125 acres of stunning natural beauty on on the edge of a cliff suspended some 100 feet above the crashing surf of Big Sur. The property is blessed with the confluence of “three waters”—a cascading freshwater, spring fed canyon creek, hot mineral spring water gushing from a seaside cliff used in rituals and healing for more than 6,000 years, and, of course, the magnificent Pacific ocean below.

Founded on the site in the 1960s, the Institute is devoted to personal growth, meditation, massage, Gestalt Practice, yoga, psychology, ecology, spirituality, and organic food. Accommodations range from bunk beds in shared rooms to private houses. The grounds offer natural hot spring baths, a farm and garden, gourmet kitchen and dining, an art center and bookstore, massage, and daily movement and meditation classes, and the opportunity to enjoy and explore one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

Why we ❤ it

There’s a lot to love about Esalen. In particular we appreciate that visitors and locals can experience this amazing place without enrolling in one of the more intensive workshops and retreats offered.

  • Enroll in a weekend workshop for an extra special get-away
  • Become a “Friend of Esalen” and schedule a private personal retreat
  • Book a massage or bodywork session. You can go to Esalen or have an Esalen trained therapist come to you.
  • Schedule time to experience the hot springs from 1:00am to 3:00am on a public access night.
